GCU Faisalabad to carry on higher education programmes, says VC

FAISALABAD – The dissolution of Higher Education Commission (HEC) is regrettable, but Government College University (GCU), despite all odds, will do its level best to continue its programmes without putting the extra financial burden on its students, said Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Zakir Hussain. He was speaking to an annual dinner hosted by GCU College of Law.
“We, as an autonomous body, are looking forward to make adjustments to meet our expenses through our own resources,” he said. The vice chancellor was of the opinion that the presence of competent faculty member in the university staff is much more important in higher education programmes. He disclosed that the GCU has got the services of more than 50 PhD professors over a period of few months. He reiterated his commitment to implement merit and transparency in the affairs of the university. “Merit is our top priority because the survival of our nation and the future of quality education is linked to merit,” he observed.
Addressing the students of law, Dr Zakir said: “You are the future of the nation as you have to take up responsibilities as judges and jurists.” He termed them the guardians of the constitution. “No nation can progress or prosper without the supremacy of law and the rule of law,” he challenged. The VC said that there is no technology park in Faisalabad to boost research skills of the students. He announced that with the valuable support of business community of Faisalabad, a technology park will be set up to cater to the research needs of the students.
Punjab Law Secretary Dr Syed Abul Hassan Najmi stressed the students to create in them a sense of reckoning so as to differentiate between evil and good. GCU’s Law College Principal Muhammad Mumtaz also addressed the audience. The dinner was attended by SSP Operations Doctor Usman Anwar, Additional Session Judge Chaudhary Nazir Ahmed, Senior Civil Judge Chaudhary Rafaqat Gondal, former President Faisalabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FCI) Sheikh Abdul Qayyum, President District Bar Association (DBA) Fawad Cheema, former DBA President SM Iqbal and a large number of senior lawyers and faculty members.
Meanwhile, GCU has recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with London-based University of Bradford Shire to promote quality education, training of faculty and students and exchange of modern trends in research and education. As per the MoU, the University of Bradford Shire will grant a special rebate in fees for four faculty members of GC University Faisalabad as a part of a mutually agreed faculty development programme.
The MoU says that both the academic institutions will extend cooperation in various fields such as management, engineering, computer science and other relevant subjects and will endeavor to cultivate the comprehensive collaborations between them. It is also agreed that each organization of higher learning will facilitate the visits of the faculty members and students of the other organization and extend support and cooperation towards their research based studies.
