LAHORE – Two labourers Saleem and Asif died while another Asif sustained injuries from a fire which erupted in a foam godown when firework sparks from a marriage ceremony fell in the godown located in Shahdara late on Saturday night.
Javed was running a small unit in a two-story building in Qureshi Mohalla in Jiya Mosa where the labourer used to prepare foam.
Two houses away, Shahzad’s mehndi was being held. Police said that Shahzad’s friends and family members fired fireworks in the air during which a firework fell on the rooftop of Javed’s godown and as a result fire erupted their within a few seconds. Police said that flames of fire engulfed the whole building within no time because of the presence of flamable material.
The police said that meanwhile three labourers including Saleem, Asif and Riyasat, who were inside, tried to extinguish fire but the roof of the dilapidated house collapsed and the three were buried under the debris. Some locals after reaching the scene immediately informed rescue officials, whose officials after reaching the scene, controlled the fire, brought out the three labuorers and shifted them to a nearby hospital where doctors pronounced Saleem dead immediately.
Asif also succumbed to his injuries in the hospital later while doctors said Riyasat is critical. Some locals said that four cattle died from the fire while valuables worth hundreds of thousands of rupees were reduced to ashes as well. Police after being informed arrested three men namely Yaseen, Jamshaid and Naveed from Shahzad’s house and started legal proceedings against them.
