This is with reference to Karachi Electric Supply Companys new scheme for its employees, shared under the instructions of Sindh High Court. According to reports published in various newspapers, the Company has identified 4,000 of its employees for the new scheme that will result in the loss of so many jobs.

It is hard to look at the situation objectively, given the already high unemployment rate, but it is a fact that many people at the Company got jobs there previously due to their political connections or alliances. Now the situation has changed as KESC is no longer a public sector organisation. It needs to abide by the law but can take any decision regarding recruiting, retaining or laying off any of its employees.

What may right now be seen as a negative decision may eventually help the utility company become more efficient in using its resources. Five billion rupees is still no small investment and shows that the employees in question will not be left totally unprovided for during these tough economic times.
