Cricket drives SZABIST students’ spirit of charity; fundraiser organised

KARACHI – The recent loss to India at the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 semi-final in Mohali seems to not have fazed cricket-crazy students in the city. One group from the Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science and Technology (SZABIST) actually went ahead and organised a cricket tournament over the weekend to raise money for a number of causes, including the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) and The Garage School.
The one-day, league-based cricket tournament, titled ‘Vigor – Drive the Spirit’, was put together by SZABIST’s BBA IV ‘D’ (Class of 2013) at the Kutchi Memon Ground in Kutchi Memon Society, Bahadurabad. The event, which was sponsored by the SZABIST Sports Society, was overseen by Hina Shamsi Nauman, a Business Ethics course instructor at the institute.
The tournament comprised six teams – Red, White, Blue, Green, Yellow and Black. Live, humour-laced match commentary, meanwhile, made the crowd forget the scorching sun. The prize money of PKR5,000 was awarded to the winning (White team) captain, Yawer Malik, during a short ceremony that was followed by a photography session.
One-third of the proceeds were donated to SIUT, while one-third of the remaining money was used to plant flowers at The Garage School.
