ISLAMABAD – Pakistan will have its first on-grid solar system soon as the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) is going to install an on-grid solar electricity generation system in less than a year at its building in Islamabad. This solar system, first of its kind in Pakistan, will convert six-storied PEC building on solar energy by February 2012.
PEC Chairperson Senator Rukhsana Zuberi said in a press conference on Saturday that the government of Japan extended a grant of 480 million yen and two solar electricity generation systems of 180 KW to Pakistan under Clean Earth Programme
These systems would be installed at PEC and Planning Commission buildings, for which PEC was an implementing partner, she added.
The smart-grid could make Pakistan self sufficient in energy, she said, adding that renewable energy was popular in countries where Feed-In Tariff (FIT) existed and enabling policies such as tax benefits were implemented. She termed the present energy crisis a mega opportunity to open tremendous jobs and business opportunities for every Pakistani.
She said extra electricity would be put on national grid through a smart meter and added that the Islamabad Electric Supply Company IESCO agreed to buy extra electricity on mutually decided tariff. This breakthrough project had paved the way of smart-grid in Pakistan that had the capability to provide earning opportunities to the dwelling units and individuals, she added.
She further said building energy code had been developed and legislation on the subject would also be completed soon.
