LAHORE – Lahore’s domination was severely challenged by Faisalabad and Sargodha on the second day of the 71st Samsung Punjab Games, being held at various venues of the city, but the hosts remained on top in majority of the disciplines on Friday.
Lahore were leading the medals tally after excelling exceptionally in different sporting events, but the challenge posed by Faisalabad and Sargodha in some disciplines might prevent them from taking the main trophy as the Games enter their final day. Majority of the finals of the Games have been slated for today. The title game of the football tournament will be played at Model Town Football Academy Ground today at 10 AM.
Lahore won the karate title with 160 points and were followed by Sargodha at second place with 76 points, and Gujranwala at third position with 50 points.
Lahore also won the lawn tennis title, leaving behind Multan and Bahawalpur as the host city ladies secured second place in volleyball, with Faisalabad taking the first position and Sahiwal coming third.
Faislabad also won the kabaddi title, while Lahore and Multan were second and third in sequence. In cycling, Lahore claimed all the three positions in the 15 kilometres road race. Sahiwal athletes won two gold medals, in 100m and 400m race, while Lahore got a gold medal in the 800m race. In boxing, Lahore and Faisalabad were running neck and neck and the final position would be decided today.
Lahore also won the weightlifting title as their weightlifters lifted the trophy with 86 points. Gujranwala with 84 points, and Faisalabad with 64 points secured the second and third places, respectively.
