ISLAMABAD – Amidst the controversy over the proposed devolution of Higher Education Commission (HEC) to the provinces, the Finance Ministry on Friday blocked the quarterly grant of Rs 7.7 billion to the commission. The amount allocated for the fiscal year 2010-11 was supposed to be released on April 1.
However, the ministry refused to release the grant, saying it could not be released until the HEC’s fate was decided. Talking to Pakistan Today, HEC Chairman Dr Javaid Leghari confirmed the report. “The money was allocated to the 71 universities for various purposes including daily expenditure and salaries of employees,” he said.
