Robber killed in shootout with Gujranwala police

GUJRANWALA – A notorious criminal was shot dead in an encounter with police near Sheranwala Park at GT Road while his three accomplices managed to escape. Reportedly, Ladhewala Warraich police conducted a raid in the residential area in the Sheranwala Park locality to arrest a robber, Sarfraz of village Varpal Chattha.
Sarfraz started firing to avoid his arrest. The police also opened fire killing him instantly.
‘CONSUMERS PROTECTION COUNCIL TO BE MADE MORE EFFECTIVE’: District Consumers Protection Council will be made more effective and result-oriented to facilitate consumers while the DCO will delegate his special powers to the councils at tehsil level to monitor the quantity and quality of products. This was decided at a special meeting of District Consumers Protection Council convened by DCO Nabil Ahmad Awan.
Assistant Director Malik Asim, DSP Fayyaz Ranjha, Ch Zahid Mumtaz, DO Agriculture Liaquat Bhatti, Parvin Sheikh and Samina Irfan were among the participants. The meeting decided to establish tehsil level councils which would be convened twice a week to hear the complaints of consumers and decide these complaints under the Consumer Act.
It was revealed that two witnesses would be compulsory for any complaint. The DCO expressed deep concern over the functioning of the district consumers’ council and said it was not coming up to the expectations of the masses. GDA RECOVERS RS 25M: Gujranwala Development Authority has recovered Rs 25 million during the last five months against the commercialisation of buildings at important city roads.
Gujranwala Development Authority Director Town Planning Khadim Hussain said that a large number of marriage halls, markets and even commercial plazas had been constructed at main roads without getting their pieces of land commercialised. More than 700 such buildings had been served notices to fulfill the legal requirements otherwise stern legal action would be taken, he added.
SUICIDE ATTACK VICTIM BURIED: Farooq Sadiq who was among the victims of the suicide attacks on the shrine of Hazrat Sakhi Sarwar was laid to rest in a local graveyard in the presence of hundreds of mourners. The deceased was the son of Muhammad Sadiq of Approach Road locality. His body was brought back the last evening from DG Khan.
Trader looted: A local trader was robbed of Rs 100,000 soon after drawing the money from a local bank situated at Sialkot Road. Reportedly, Mohsin Iqbal of Sialkot Road drew the money from Muslim Commercial Bank (MCB) Bank Sialkot Road branch. As he left the bank, two motorcyclists snatched the money from him and escaped.
Floral exhibition: An annual floral exhibition was held at Nishan-e-Manzil Gujranwala Cantt where Corps Commander Lt-Gen Raheel Sharif was the chief guest. People from all walks of life participated in the event wholeheartedly. A large gathering of viewers witnessed the colourful presentation of flowers and appreciated the aesthetic sense of the participants.
The chief guest distributed prizes among the winners in different categories.
