ISLAMABAD – Political compulsions made President Asif Ali Zardari send packing his two trusted friends – Sindh Home Minister Dr Zulfiqar Mirza and Federal Investigation Agency Director Genereal Waseem Ahmed – on Wednesday, a price he had to pay in a huge political compromise to keep his party in power.
Mirza and Waseem were both looking after security-related tasks. Mirza was pulled out of the Sindh cabinet after repeated demands from the Muttahida Qaumi Movement – the party that holds the key to the Pakistan People’s Party’s majority in parliament – while Waseem resigned on orders from the Supreme Court, which had ruled that he had conducted inappropriate investigation into the Haj scam.
