KARACHI – Sharjeel Inam Memon, a Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) MPA, Wednesday was inducted in the Sindh cabinet and allotted the portfolio of the Information Ministry. Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan administered the oath at a ceremony held at the Governor’s House.
Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah and provincial ministers were also present on the occasion. Sharjeel was already serving as in-charge of the PPP Media Cell. He basically belongs to Hyderabad, however, was elected as MPA from PS-62, Tharparkar. By profession, he is a businessman, dealing in real estate. He did his masters in Economics from the University of Sindh, Jamshoro, and BE from Mehran University.
He has remained close to PPP’s senior leader, Makhdoom Amin Fahim, and former Sindh Home Minister Dr. Zulfiqar Mirza. He had strongly defended Mirza in and outside the Sindh Assembly amidst strong criticism by the MQM. Memon has also remained vocal in the Sindh Assembly in targeting media and judiciary for their ‘anti-PPP’ actions.
Currently, he is facing a contempt of court notice issued by the Supreme Court along with a senior leader of the party, Taj Haider, for their remarks on the court’s judgment against former NAB Chairman Deedar Hussain Shah. He was also mover of the resolution passed by the Sindh Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan for his remarks against Deedar Hussain Shah.
He is the fourth person during the PPP’s government who has been assigned the portfolio of Information Ministry. Before him, Taj Haider, former spokesperson of Bilawal House Jamil Ahmed Soomro and Shazia Atta Marri had looked after the ministry’s affairs.
