Curtain rises on Punjab Games today

LAHORE – The full dress rehearsal of 71st Samsung Punjab Games was carried out here at the Punjab Stadium on Wednesday while the formal opening of the games will be held today (Thursday) at 7.30 pm when Chief Minister Punjab Mian Shahbaz Sharif will declare the event open.
Organising secretary Idris Haider Khawaja said that all the nine divisions of the province have reached Lahore and took active part in the rehearsal. He said that different events will start at different venues of the city in the morning while the formal opening will be made by the Chief Minister in the evening.
In all, 19 disciplines will be contested which include eight female events. The venues include Nashter Park Arena, University ground Old Campus, Islamia College Civil Lines, Iqbal Park Sports Complex, Physical Education College Township, Bagh-i-Jinnah and Defence Stadium. He said that a tug-of-war competition has also been scheduled for the opening day between the journalists and organisers.
He praised the sponsors Samsung for their contribution to the games while welcomed the supported extended by the Punjab government. He said that the closing ceremony of the games will be held on Saturday at 6 pm and Governor Punjab Sardar Latif Khosa will be the chief guest and distribute the prizes among the winners.
