Will Smith and son Jaden have signed on to star in a new sci-fi film from director M Night Shyamalan, Columbia Pictures announced today. A synopsis from The Hollywood Reporter says that the film is set 1000 years into the future, and Jaden will play a boy who must find his way around an abandoned planet after his spaceship has crashed; like in real life, Will smith will take on the role of his father.
“The chance to make a scary, science-fiction film starring Jaden and Will is my dream project,” Shyamalan said in a statement. Rumors of the film began churning last October, when the project, now untitled, was known as “One Thousand AE.” At the time, Smith was only set to produce, though rumor had it that the film was being developed for Jaden.
The director hopes that this will be a rebound for him; his last directorial effort, “The Last Airbender,” was an epic failure, both at the box office and with critics. Will and Jaden Smith have appeared in a film as father and son before, in 2006’s “The Pursuit of Happyness.” Jaden had a box office smash last summer with the remake of “The Karate Kid.”
