Production of light automobiles rises

ISLAMABAD – Production of cars and jeeps surged by 15.10 percent during the first seven months of the current fiscal year in comparison to the same time last year. As many as 75,537 cars and jeeps were produced during July-January 2010-11 as compared to the production of 65,626 units last year, according to data provided by Federal Bureau of Statistics.
The production of cars and jeeps witnessed growth of 8.52 percent during January 2011 as compared to the same month of last year. Production of cars and jeeps was recorded at 12,081 units during January 2011 as compared to the production of 11,133 units during January 2010, the data revealed.
Furthermore, production of Light Commercial Vehicles (LCV) grew by an exemplary 21.18 percent and 26.33 percent during July-January (2010-11) and January 2011 respectively as compared to the same period last year.LCV production during July-January (2010-11) was recorded at 10,746 units as compared to 8,868 units last year.
Similarly LCV production during January 2010 stood at 1,785 units as compared to 1,413 units last January. Production of motorcycles during the first seven months of current year also rose by 17.98 percent by increasing from 776,369 units last year to 915,961 units this year. Motorcycle production during January 2011 was recorded at 147,060 units while it was 122,375 units in the previous corresponding period, showing an increase of 20.17 percent.
However, production of tractors, trucks and buses fell by 3.30 percent, 12.20 percent and 26.06 percent respectively during the same timeframe. Production of trucks during the period under review stood at 38,609 units as compared to 39,925 units last year. Similarly truck production was measured at 1,620 units as compared to 1,845 units while production of buses was recorded at 278 units as compared to 376 units last year. Production of trucks and buses plummeted by 46.59 percent and 35.71 percent during January (2010-11) while the production of tractors witnessed a slight increase of 0.77 percent.
Manufacturing of trucks during January stood at 188 units as compared to 352 during January 2010 and production of buses stood at 36 units as compared to 56 units during last January. Tractor production figures were determined to be 5,860 units during January 2011 in contrast to 5,815 units produced during last January, showing a slight increase of 0.77 percent.
