Outages multiply as summer begins to get oppressive

LAHORE – With the summer season intensifying, the demand and supply gap has widened; thereby increasing load shedding in the city to 10 years on Tuesday. Some of the areas experienced outages for up to six hours due to technical repairs, while the majority of the city faced five-hour outages.
The outskirts of the city were lesser fortunate, facing up to 10-hour electricity closures. Some citizens were critical of load-shedding during peak working hours. Saeeda Khalid a resident of Faisal Town, said local residents have made a litany of complaints to LESCO about odd load-shedding hours, but to no avail. On the hand, traders continue to suffer due to frequent outages.
“People mostly turn up for shopping in the evening but they shy away because of the closure of electricity,” said Babar Bhatti, shopower of Liberty Market. Meanwhile the power shortfall on Monday increased to 2,310MW, as power production remained 10,783MW while demand touched 13,093MW. Hydroelectric power generation improved to reach 4,199MW; thermal generation was 1,771MW and Independent Power Prodcuers (IPPs) produced 475 megawatts of electricity.
