LAHORE – A division bench of the Lahore High Court Tuesday granted bail to Saud Aziz, former City Police Officer (CPO) Rawalpindi, and then SP Rawalpindi City Khurram Shehzad in the murder case of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto.
The bench comprising LHC Chief Justice Ijaz Ahmad Chaudhry and Justice Ijazul Ahsan allowed bail to Saud Aziz and Khurram Shahzad on surety bonds of Rs 1 million each. The court also directed the accused to surrender their passports to stop them from fleeing the country.
The accused denied the allegations saying that they were implicated in the Benazir assassination case by the government of President Pervez Musharraf who wanted to save their own skin. Rawalpindi Police had lodged cases against the two officials, accusing them of negligence of duty regarding the security of Benazir Bhutto on the day of her murder in a bomb blast in Liaquat Bagh.
Saud and Kurram were arrested on December 22, 2010 after cancellation of their bails by a Pindi court.
