LAHORE – Judicial Magistrate Irfan Basra on Friday sent former Punjab chief minister Pervaiz Elahi’s son Moonis Elahi on judicial remand until April 15. However instead of being shifted to the jail, Moonis was moved into a NADRA rest house “due to his security concerns and sensitivities of his political affiliation”.
Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) authorities produced the accused who is allegedly involved in the National Insurance Corporation scam in court after completion of his 14-day physical remand. Moonis was brought to district courts in an armoured personal carrier (APC) and was retained in the APC for a long time before being taken to court.
During the hearing, defence lawyer Iqbal Bhatti argued that FIA could not recover a single rupee from Moonis during the physical remand, which clearly showed he was innocent and the court may pass an order to release him as he was being victimised politically After hearing the arguments, the judge ordered that Moonis be sent to jail on judicial remand until April 15.
The court also rejected an application filed by the defence lawyer seeking Moonis’ detention at some rest house in view of his political status. However, Moonis was shifted to NADRA Rest House later in the evening due to security concerns and the sensitivity of his political affiliations, sources told Pakistan Today.
