KARACHI – The Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) led by former Sindh chief minister Liaquat Ali Jatoi on Friday decided to file a constitutional petition in the Supreme Court requesting that the court stops the government from working, forms a caretaker government under Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudry’s guidance, and conducts general elections.
The decision was made during a meeting of the AIP Central Executive Council (CEC) held in a local hotel on Friday. Briefing the media, Jatoi said that following the declaration that 37 million bogus votes were cast during the last general elections, the present ruling party has no any moral right to continue.
“We will go to the Supreme Court to prevent the government from continuing its rule. A new caretaker government must be set up under court guidance to hold general elections,” he said, adding that all institutions have failed and the government should be handed over to the chief justice CJ so that it can rise from its economic crises.
However, Jatoi could not respond to a question that the voter lists were prepared by the Musharraf government of whom he was also a part and if this government was illegitimate, then how come the earlier government was legitimate. The former chief minister also requested the Supreme Court that all pending cases regarding the National Reconciliation Ordinance must be decided at the earliest.
Claiming that his life was in danger, Jatio said he had written to the Supreme Court and the high court in this regard. He alleged the Sindh Irrigation Minister was getting 40 percent commission on repairing already strong dykes along the Indus River. “I am against the construction of Kalabagh Dam and refused to support it during the Nawaz Sharif and Pervez Musharraf governments,” said Jatoi.
He added that his party was striving to become an alternative to the PPP in Sindh and will announce its campaign against the government on May 1.
