LONDON – Bringing the cheerful and colourful face of Pakistan to the forefront, a fascinating exhibition of world famous truck art of Pakistan has been launched at the Stockwood Discovery Centre in Luton.
The launch event took place in the presence of Minister Political Pakistan High Commission Nafees Zakaria, Mayor of Luton Tom Shaw, Lord Qurban Hussain, Chairman Board of Trustees Luton Culture, Nick Gibson, Director for museums for Luton Culture Karen Perkins and a large number of people from all walks of life.
A Bedford truck decorated with brightly coloured paintings of peacocks, eagles, flowers and landscapes, patterns peculiar to the truck art is the centre piece of the exhibition that will be on display from March 29 to May 29 at the Stockwood Discovery Centre and at Luton Mela on July 24.
The project is part of Eastern Exchanges – a London 2012 Cultural Olympiad, Stories of The World programme. Twenty young British and British Pakistani artists led by Pakistani artist Haider Ali and UK folk wagon artist Rory Coxhill participated in the painting and decoration of vintage Bedford truck.
Addressing a large gathering at the launch event, Minister Political of Pakistan High Commission , who had been the moving force behind the project, congratulated the Luton Borough Council and Luton Cultural Centre for organising the Truck Art Project, an effort on their part towards cultural fusion and cohesion, saying that the effort would serve to strengthen relations between the people of Pakistan and Britain.
