ISLAMABAD – Urging close working relation between the intelligence agencies of the two countries, parliamentarians from Pakistan and Afghanistan on Wednesday emphasised efforts to combat terrorism jointly.
In a joint statement issued on the last day of talks between the lawmakers of the two countries, the lawmakers said that terrorism had been the major impediment in the development of both Pakistan and Afghanistan. The talk were organised by the PILDAT. Lawmakers also stressed for cooperation between the two parliaments.
Afghan parliamentarians also expressed concerns on the longer delays for clearance of goods under the Afghan Transit Trade. They also decided to hold their next meeting in Kabul in May this year. Later responding to the queries of the journalists, Head of Afghan parliamentarians delegation Sayed Ishaq Gilani, a member of Afghan Wolesi Jirga, said that during the meeting with President Zardari they requested for release of containers stopped at Karachi port.
To anther question regarding Indian consulates in Afghanistan and their alleged involvement in Balochistan, Gilani said that four Indian consulates were working in Afghanistan out of which two were close to the Pakistani border. Senate Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs Chairman Senator Salim Saifullah told the media that recently Punjab Government had offered 6000 scholarships to Afghan students.
He also expressed concerns on the increased production of narcotics in Pakistan and said that terrorists were using the drug money. He further told that the delegates have suggested to make Pak-Afgan visa free for the parliamentarians.
