FAISALABAD – Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (FESCO) has announced to introduce a state-of-the-art anti-theft device called Global Positioning System (GPS) Technology to check the theft of its installations, including transformers and wires.
The decision was taken following a growing number of thefts in which transformers and wires worth millions of rupees were stolen by unscrupulous elements. Addressing 77th meeting of FESCO’s Board of Directors, Chairman Nadeem Aftab Sindhu said the FESCO consists of eight districts sprawling over 47,000 square kilometers.
The FESCO installations have spread from TT Singh to Chashma. He said following a number of frequent burglary incidents, the administration has been directed to further strengthen its linkages with local administration and police to discourage theft. He added that in addition to a proactive monitoring, the arrangement to utilize the high-tech GPS system would also be exploited.
Nadeem Aftab Sindhu directed the FESCO administration to draw out a feasibility study to purchase the most modern but affordable GPS technology. The board expressed satisfaction over the performance of FESCO and constituted four committees to solve consumers’ problems. These are Audit and Finance Committee, Human Resources Committee, Technical and Material Management Committee and Legal Advisory Committee.
Answering a question, the board chairman briefed that FESCO was purchasing power from NTDC and five local small power producers to fulfill its public obligations. He said most of the industrial units have established their own powerhouses to meet their electricity needs while FESCO is considering purchasing their surplus electricity to reinforce its system.
The board also reviewed arrangements for the repair and maintenance of damaged and burnt distribution transformers. The board chairman directed the FESCO administration to prepare a feasibility report for the rehabilitation of the abandoned workshop in Sargodha and hoped its revival would not only reduce the burden on Faisalabad workshop but also ensure immediate repair of damaged and burnt transformers in far-flung areas of Mianwalai, Bhakkar and Khushab.
The meeting was also attended by the board of directors’ members, University of Agriculture Faisalabad Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Iqrar Ahmed Khan, Mian Muhammad Latif, Mian Hamid Javed, Wasif Majeed, CEO FESCO Tariq Mehmood Chattha, Prof Dr Niaz Ahmed Akhtar, Rana Mushtaq Ahmed, Naseer Ahmed, Malik Asghar Ali Qaiser, Tariq Mehmood and Ms Bilqees Akhtar.
