LAHORE – Local Christian community resort to religion as the excitement of the mighty semi-final reaches its climax at Mohali today. Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Shareef offered special Nafl for the team and praying for victory, the Christian community tends to stand side by side praying for the same cause.
Cricket is in the air, everyone is trying to support their home team in their own little way. While the Muslims community are offering special prays after Jumma, the Christian are dedicating their fasts to the country’s victory. “I’ve instructed all of my family members to fast tomorrow and dedicate it for the victory of Pakistan”, said Javaid Masih, a contractor at a parking stand at the Plaza Cinema.
It is the fasting season for Christians as Good Friday and Easter is closing in rapidly. Javaid Masih, a father of four, said he had asked his daughters to pray for Pakistan in all matches. Javaid Masih said that he had distributed money in her daughters for praying for Pakistan’s win. “I gave Rs 50 to both my daughters when Pakistan defeated West Indies and Rs 100 when the green-shirts beat the Aussies,” said Javaid.
“And I plan to give my daughters Rs 200 each for the match against India,” he added. He revealed that he lives with six brothers and their wives in the same house. “All of us intend to fast for Pakistan’s win tomorrow. If by the grace of God Pakistan wins the final as well, I would give Rs 500 each to my daughters,” added Javaid.
Henna Joseph, a student of Convent of Jesus and Mary, said, “I’m fasting only for my country tomorrow, may God bless us with the powers of defeating India.” She said that the she plans to do something extra on Good Friday if Pakistan beats India. “I plan to distribute biryaani on Good Friday if Pakistan goes through to the finals,” she added.
Aman Robert, a guitarist of a local rock band, said that he had visited the church on the last Sunday just to pray for Pakistan. “The only thing on my mind in the church was Pakistan’s semi-final on Wednesday,” said Aman. He said that he would give a treat to his friends after the victory of Pakistan. He said that it did not matter who wins or looses, “I just want our players to play with high spirits,” he added.
Rasheed Masih said that he had arranged for a big meal for all his family members. “Its not only about this match; the Pakistani team has had our prayers since the start,” added Rasheed. “This is a special time of the year for us, we pray that whatever happens should happen for the good,” he said.
Father Francis, from a local church, said, “Minority is a part of the Pakistani nation and we fully support our team as it would bring dignity and respect for Pakistan in the world.” He said every community loves cricket and are hopeful for the Pakistani cricket team.
