KARACHI – Dawood College of Engineering and Technology (DCET) was left in a state of shock on Monday after its principal, Professor Salman Baloch, committed suicide on campus. Baloch jumped off the rooftop of the four-storey DCET building, but he was still breathing when his colleagues and students found him. He was immediately rushed to the Liaquat National Hospital, but he breathed his last on the way. The principal had come to the college as per normal, DCET students told Pakistan Today, and not much seemed wrong. The principal not only met with regular students, but also with members of the Student Action Committee and took immediate action to redress their grievances.
After the meetings were over, Baloch went on a round of the campus along with his staff members and a peon. During the round, students said, Baloch abruptly headed towards the rooftop of a building and asked his colleagues to wait in his office. “Baloch Saheb jumped from the rooftop, as it is impossible to fall from the roof. There is a four-feet-high iron grill that is affixed along the boundary of the roof, and so, an accident is out of the questions,” the students said.
The students alleged that their principal was being pressured by the high-ups of the administration over “unknown reasons.” On the other hand, Jamshed Quarters station house officer (SHO) claimed that the professor took such an extreme step as he was “mentally depressed” due to unknown reasons. His body, meanwhile, was taken to the Civil Hospital Karachi for post-mortem procedures.
