ISLAMABAD – The National Assembly Standing Committee on Water and Power was told in a meeting chaired by Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah here on Monday that there would be no respite from grueling power outages during the hot summer months and people in urban areas would have to bear daily outages of at least 4 to 6 hours, while those in rural areas would be subjected to 6 to 8 hours of no power from April to September.
National Assembly members attending the meeting were not interested in listening to the presentations of the power sector mandarins and merely wanted to know the duration of the daily power outages. The committee was told that the net power availability would be 14,000 megawatts (MW), with average power outages remaining between 3500MW to 4000MW in the summer as compared to last year’s average outages of 5500MW.
The committee was also told that dedicated police patrols would commence in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa within the next few days to stop power theft and recover arrears.
