LAHORE – Law Minister Babar Awan told a press conference at the residence of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) member Farrukh Sohail on Sunday that the PPP had decided to file a reference in the Supreme Court (SC) for “revisiting of judgement” of the Zulfikar Ali Bhutto case and the federal cabinet, expected to meet today (Monday), would also approve the decision and President Asif Ali Zardari would file the reference within next two days.
Awan said that the PPP was expecting a response similar to the one in the case of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz chief Nawaz Sharif under the “doctrine of limitations”. He said the PPP was hopeful that the entire record of the case of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto would be kept carefully and protected by the concerned officials after the party had decided to file the reference.
He said Bhutto, the PPP’s late founder, was judicially murdered and fake cases were registered against former premier Benazir Bhutto and President Asif Ali Zardari, but the PPP always stood up for the rule of law. He said further that the entire nation knew that no notice was issued despite negative public reaction to the verdict in the Raymond Davis case.
Awan added that the entire PPP stood behind its “stalwarts” such as Taj Haider and Sharjeel Memon and they would appear in court and prove that the party respected the law and the constitution. Awan criticised the Punjab government for cutting the development budged of South Punjab and urged the people of Dera Ghazi Khan to vote for the “right candidate”.
He said the development budget of South Punjab, which was Rs 18 billion, was cut by 17.2 percent but the Punjab government was spending Rs 2.5 billion on building a flyover at Kalma Chowk in Lahore.
