Newage notch Spring Cup title

LAHORE – Newage Cables clinched the Spring Polo Cup here at the Lahore Polo Club by beating Guard Group 9-7 in the final on Sunday. Earlier in the day, Pony Express secured third place in the tournament after their closely-contested win over PESSI.
Chief guest of the final, Ambassador of France in Pakistan, HE Daniel Jouanneau, enjoyed the final of the Spring Cup to the fullest along with holiday gathering crowd. Although Hamza Mawaz Khan provided lead to Guard Group but Shah Shamyl Alam levelled the score showing his class in the game by producing five goals of the 9-7 win.
The opening chukker was fought hard by the teams and when it ended, Guards were in 3-2 lead. Hamza after his opening goal, saw Shamyl and Shaukat Ali Malik scoring two goals but he came up with another two to get his team ahead. Shamyl with another two goals and Taimur Mawaz Khan with one goal got Newage ahead of Guards 5-3.
From then on, Guards remained were deficit till the start of the fourth chukker. The teams managed two goals each in the third quarter and Taimur Ali Malik got even with two goals to mark the start of the fourth chukker but Adnan Jillal Azam and Shamyl brought the winning goals.
On the other hand, Agha Murtaza Ali Khan hit four of the seven goals for Pony Express. Mian Hussain Iftikhar produced two goals and Omar Asjad Malhi one to ensure win for Pony Express, who also enjoyed half-a-goal advantage. Atif Yar Tiwana fought till the end for the losing side scoring five goals.
On goal for the losing team was scored by Atif Yar Tiwana. Umpires for the match were Saqib Khan Khakwani, Raja Temur Nadeem and Naveed M Sheikh.
