JAKARTA – Thousands of Indonesian Muslims rallied peacefully in the Indonesian capital on Sunday to condemn the coalition air strikes in Libya and urge leader Moamer Kadhafi to step down. Protesters from the Islam-based Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) shouted “Libya! Freedom!” and “Dictator, No! Oppression, No! Murder, No!”
“The people and government of Indonesia should join with Russia, China, Turkey and India to oppose the military invasion by the allies in Libya,” PKS leader Selamat Selamat told the crowd, as quoted by Antara news agency.
“We condemn the use of military violence carried out by the Libyan regime to silence its citizens… That’s enough Khadafi, step down,” another PKS leader Triwisaksana was quoted as saying by Detikcom news website. Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country, last month condemned the escalating violence in Libya and demanded the UN take action to restore security and prevent a spike in oil prices.
