KARACHI – “It is the source of inspiration that compels ideas to materialise. We are the product of our circumstances – social, economic and political. My basic inspiration comes from the ambient circumstances,” says Rabia Zuberi.
Retrospection in Zuberi’s work lets her conclude that there have been different phases of progress of her work. From the early era of sculpture until the mid-60s, the idea took its strength from the great innocence of infants and the universal mother love.
“The forms that came up were under the subject matter of mother and child, and infants and animals. After migrating to Pakistan, another perspective of feelings and experiences appeared; another phase started to respond to the circumstantial realities and uncertainties,” she said.
Through the wide array of human figures, the most delicate, private feelings have been expressed that are actually abstract and immaterial. The most significant period to come next is the deep study and research into human form for its beauty. The elements of investigation are delicacy of texture, rhythmic beauty of posture, and continuity of line and weight.
“The ‘Labour’ series appeared with the same characteristics with its individuals and groups of figures, paying homage to the dignity of labour, strength, grace and beauty of human figure. The eminent element of expression of human figure remains there to have deep interaction with design as an element of sculpture, resulting in deep-cut decorated surfaces,” she explains.
