ISLAMABAD – Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan said on Saturday that Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) had revitalised the country’s foreign policy. In an interview with APP, she said unlike past Pakistan was not seeking aid from the friendly countries now rather was interested in trade. She added that PPP leadership always kept national interests above party politics by following the politics of reconciliation.
She further said the government for the first time in 2008 appointed opposition leader in the National Assembly as head of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC). She added that 60 percent parliamentary committees were headed by the opposition parties. This, she continued, shows that PPP fully believes in strengthening parliamentary system and wants to make the committee system more powerful. She said when Benazir Bhutto inked charter of democracy with Mian Nawaz Sharif in 2006, it was an indication that PPP wanted to take all political forces onboard to bring constitution in its original shape.
She said PPP leadership showed sagacity and formed a parliamentary committee for creating consensus on the 18th Amendment Bill, and thus the constitution was amended with total consensus. She further said despite limited mandate, the PPP regime has taken several steps for the provision of relief to the poor segments of society.
