ISLAMABAD – Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) on Thursday asked the government to convene emergency meetings of the UN and foreign ministers of the entire Muslim world to record protest at the international level against the desecration of the Holy Quran by an American pastor. Speaking at a news conference here, JI Secretary General Liaqat Baloch termed the desecration of the Holy Quran by the pastor as ‘ideological terrorism’ of the US and the West which, he said, was condemnable in the strongest terms. He said though President Asif Ali Zardari had condemned the incident in his address to the joint session of the parliament, but it was not enough.
He demanded the government raise the matter at the UN level, besides convening an emergency meeting of the foreign ministers of the Islamic countries to condemn the incident. He announced that JI chief Syed Munawar Hassan would lead a protest rally on March 27 in the federal capital against the desecration of the Holy Quran and the release of Raymond Davis. Referring to the US drone attacks in the tribal areas, Baloch said innocent people were being killed while the rulers, including the army chief, were reluctant to take practical steps to stop violation of the country’s sovereignty.
