KARACHI – Adopting a new strategy for attacking the people of Karachi, terrorists fired two rockets at a madressa in the Malir area on Wednesday. A rocket hit the walls of an Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ) madressa near the Jamia mosque, whereas a second rocket landed in the Ghazi ground a few minutes later. The walls of the madressa were damaged in the attacks; however, no casualties were reported as a result.
The rocket attacks spread panic in the area while the law enforcement agencies cordoned off the locality and launched search operations, consequently arresting over a dozen suspects. The Malir Town Police Officer said that the rockets hit the boundary wall of the Jamia Masjid al Mustafa. The initial investigation suggested that the rockets were fired from the Dar Muhammad Goth area of Malir, the officer added.
He said that the Dar Muhammad Goth area is under the control of a Sindhi nationalist group and the police are unable to take action against them due to political pressure. Sources in the police department said that RR-107 rockets, which have the capability to hit a target in the range of 5-7 kilometres, were used in the attacks.
According to the Malir Town Municipal Administration, two groups in the area have turned against each another, and the administration has been trying to negotiate with them since the past few days. “We have so far failed to gather both groups for a discussion, but we shall try again to bring harmony between them,” said an official of the administration.
