FDE to be placed under ICT

ISLAMABAD – After the devolution of education ministry to provinces, government will place Federal Directorate of Education (FDE) under the administrative control of Islamabad Capital Territory, it has been learnt.
A source in Education Ministry told Pakistan Today that after the devolution of Education Ministry to provinces under 18th Constitutional Amendment, which is likely to be completed within a month, FDE which deals with 408 educational institutions will be given under the administrative control of ICT.
Director General FDE Shaheen Khan said that till the issuance of notification she could not speak about the fate of FDE. “It has come to my knowledge unofficially that FDE will be handed over to ICT but FDE has not received any official letter in this regard yet,” she added. Currently FDE runs 208 primary schools, 58 middle schools, 102 secondary schools, 20 FG Higher Secondary, 10 FG colleges and 20 model colleges, with more than 7000 teachers associated with it.
It is also pertinent to mention here that March 15 was deadline set by implementation commission to devolve education, culture, tourism, health and livestock ministries to province however commission had to face provincial chief secretaries’ apprehensions for accommodating employees of the said ministries.
A total of 13,216 educational institutions with 1,463,554 students are working under the Education Ministry in Islamabad Capital Territory, Azad Jammu Kashmir, Gilgit Baltistan and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas. The number of employees in these institutions has risen to 79,744, with 61,189 teaching and 18,555 non-teaching staff that would be affected by the devolution.
