LAHORE – It was nothing short of a commando action that saw the release of US national Raymond Davis after his indictment by a local court on Wednesday, with the Punjab government turning out to be the biggest facilitator. In fact the US government could not have asked for more from the Punjab government.
No wonder, even a person like Rana Sanaullah who is ever ready to take on his opponents seemed quite subdued while facing the volley of questions from reporters and political figures on the role of the Punjab government in the development. Although everything has been done in accordance with the law, the haste that was observed in wrapping up the trial created not only doubts among the political leaders and analysts, but forced the general public to say that things could have been handled more smoothly.
The haste shown in the entire episode tells the story about who did what. Incidentally, the Punjab chief minister was in London for a routine medical check-up when all this happened. His brother Nawaz Sharif is already there and as per reports pouring in from there, he is being looked after very well by the British government.
Sources disclosed that the British government played an active role in the release of Raymond. It is learnt that Baroness Sayeeda Warsi during a recent visit to Pakistan held a detailed meeting with Nawaz Sharif and Shahbaz Sharif, urging them to do their bit for Davis’ release. She had not returned empty-handed, the sources said.
