Refusing OPV makes infant third polio victim

KARACHI – Almost every new polio case in Sindh so far has appeared in those places where people have refused oral polio vaccine (OPV) being administered to children under five, Expanded Programme for Immunisation (EPI) Sindh Manager Dr Mazhar Khamisani said.
One-year-old Ayaz Muhammad Hayat is the third victim of the crippling virus in the province, bringing the total number of cases in the country this year to 15. Tando Muhammad Khan’s Hayat had absolutely no history of vaccination, Khamisani said, adding that Hayat’s family always refused to get him vaccinated against polio.
When asked why polio cases prevail in Sindh, Khamisani said that his department is running anti-polio campaigns since the past several years. There is nothing wrong with the anti-polio campaign; problems arise where people refuse to get their children vaccinated, he added.
