Labour Department builds 1,296 houses for the labourers

LAHORE – Provincial Labour and Auqaf Minister Syed Ehsaan-ud-Din Qureshi announced the establishment of a residential colony for labourers consisting 1296 houses worth Rs 2177 million each on Defence Road, during a departmental briefing on Wednesday. Qureshi said 70 percent development work had been completed in the colony where all basic and modern residential facilities will be available.
He said that forty-six workers’ welfare schools will be set up for the labourers’ children and free education including books, stationery, transport and uniform would be provided to 28,000 children. He said welfare board would bear all educational expenses of the labourers’ children in rest of the six districts of the Punjab where welfare schools did not exist. He said second shift would be introduced in seven workers’ welfare schools.
The minister said labour department’s aim was to provide free healthcare facilities to the workers and their families. He said during the last financial year, more than 6,005,265 workers were provided healthcare facilities worth Rs 3,387 million. He said that the labour department would launch two medical colleges in Lahore and Faisalabad. He added that the Labour Department had established satellite clinics at Phoolnagar, Jaranwala and Hasan Abdal to provide specialised medical facilities near to the labourers’ workplace.
Labour Welfare provincial secretary and directors briefed the minister on the departments’ activities as well as ongoing developmental schemes.
