HYDERABAD – At least seven prisoners were killed while 30 people, including policemen, injured when the inmates at the Central jail Hyderabad clashed with the prison’s administration on Tuesday. The violence started after police launched an operation to recover arms, mobile phones and drugs from the prisoners.
The prisoners resisted the move by started rioting and climbed onto the rooftops of the barracks besides setting their belongings on fire. Officials said six TT pistols and dozens of mobile phones were seized during the action launched on the directives of the top authorities of jail. On the other hand, a TV channel reported that the prisoners were protesting against insufficient facilities.
More police contingents were called in to control the situation after police opened fire, killing at least seven prisoners. The prisoners held hostage at least six jail officials and riot was continuing till filing of this report. Political activists, meanwhile, came out in Qasimabad and Naseem Nagar against the killings and forced shopkeepers shut their businesses.
