KARACHI – The Sindh Assembly might start legislation from Wednesday (today) after the expected return of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP)’s major coalition partner – the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) – to the House as the latter is likely to end its boycott of the Provincial Assembly.
The freshly convened Sindh Assembly session started on Tuesday with Speaker Nisar Ahmed Khuhro in chair. Sindh Local Government Minister Agha Siraj Durrani told the chair that legislation was delayed due to differences between the coalition partners since the government needs to make decisions after taking its allies on board.
He said that the PPP leadership was in contact with Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan and the MQM leadership, including Sardar Ahmed, on the issue. He hoped that the House would return to legislation soon. Sindh Law Minister Ayaz Soomro said that some important bills were pending for the past several days. He told the speaker that two bills – the Sindh Protection and Prohibition of Amenity Plots Bill, and the Sindh Local Government Bill – were already in process of introduction.
He said that some other bills were in process of consideration – a bill regarding amendments in the Sindh Land Revenue Act, another bill regarding the Lyari Development Authority and the Malir Development Authority, and a bill about Sindh’s shops.
The speaker corrected a member of the Provincial Assembly, saying that the new session was not a part of the new parliamentary year.
He said that the new parliamentary year would start on April 6. He added that the current session was a part of the third parliamentary year.
