6 more fall prey to Karachi shootings

KARACHI – At least six more people fell prey to targeted killings in the recent spate of violence and bloodshed in the city on Tuesday, raising the toll to 45 dead in six days. Activists of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) were among those killed in several incidents of targeted killings in various parts of the city.
Two dead bodies were found in the Zaman Town and Baghdadi police precincts. Two people were shot dead and one was injured by unidentified assailants near Fariya Street, Kharadar. Kharadar police station officials said Muhammad Hanif, 57, son of Umar Ahmed and Shahzad, 30, son of Muhammad Hanif was standing outside their houses when two armed men opened fire at them.
Both were killed on the spot and their bodies were taken to Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK) for postmortem. Javed, a passerby, was also wounded in the shooting and was taken to CHK for treatment. Police registered a first information report (FIR) under section 302, 34 on the complaint of the injured man.
In another incident, 30-year-old Lal Muhammad was killed and two of his colleagues named Aijaz and Umar were injured when unidentified assailants shot at them near 100 Quarters, Korangi. Officials at the Zaman Town police station said the victim and injured were workers of MQM Korangi Sector. They said no FIR had been registered as yet.
In yet another incident, 32-year-old Nawaz Khan was gunned down and two others sustained injuries when unidentified gunmen open fire at a shop near Goal Market, Nazimabad. Officials in Shamim Shaheed police station said Nawaz, son of Rozi Khan, was standing with his friends Asif and Imtiaz when the gunmen began shooting at them, killing Nawaz on the spot.
Officials claimed that the victim was an active worker of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) in the area. Separately, the handcuffed and bullet-riddled body of a man identified as 30-year-old Imran Hussain, son of Noor Muhammad, was found in Baghdadi, Lyari. Police said the body was found stuffed into a sack lying by the road. A FIR was registered against unidentified assailants.
Another bullet-riddled body that also bore signs of torture was recovered from a garbage dump in Sector 50, Korangi. Officials in Zaman Town police station said the body was recovered on a tip-off from area residents. Police registered a FIR on behalf of the state.
