KARACHI – An art exhibition showcasing the works of five young artists opened at the Canvas Gallery on Tuesday. The show is being curated by eminent artist and educator Muhammad Ali Talpur; whereas the participating artists are Donia Kaiser, Farah Munawar, Fazal Rizvi, Shamsuddin and Suleman Khilji.
Kaiser said, “My work is about the absence of two members of my family – my father and my elder sister. It also depicts the struggle and journey of my mom.” The show includes Kaiser’s ‘Presence of Absence’ series. Munawar said, “My work consists of nostalgic patternmaking, which is initially inspired by traditional miniature. I am using colours, dots and squares, producing images that appear to be black and white from a distance.
However, as we move closer, it gives you patterns and colours, and the image starts distorting and disappearing. This is how our memory works. It’s about incessant nihility and like a film or a flashback.” The show includes Munawar’s ‘Can You See Me’, ‘Landscape’ series, and ‘Maana’.
Khilji said, “My work is about the influence of different fears. I have tried to capture my imaginative memories, derived by mythologies that were told by my grandfather and father.” The show includes Khilji’s ‘Inside Out’, ‘On the Way’ series, ‘Night Ride’, and ‘Comfortably Ill’.
The show, which would run until March 24, also includes Rizvi’s ‘Diptych’; ‘For I Love You More’; ‘Forgive Me, Forgive Me Not’; ‘Holy, Unholy’; ‘The Father, the Son and the Holy Goat’ series; ‘The Kiss’; and ‘Who’s Afraid of the Dark’; as well as Shamsuddin’s untitled works.
