KARACHI – Total 7,435 people lost their lives because of terrorism in 2010, a recent report issued by Individualland has revealed. The report stated that 1,796 civilians, 469 security personnel and 5,170 terrorists were killed in terror incidents last year.
According to the report compiled by Individualland Executive Director Gulmina Bilal Ahmed, 2,324 civilians, 991 security personnel and 8,389 terrorists were killed in terror incidents in 2009. A comparative review of these figures indicates that there has been a marked decrease in loss of lives over the last two years.
At least 32,655 fatalities have been reported due to terrorism since 2003; whereas 9,410 civilians have lost their lives in the war on terror and 3,326 security personnel laid down their lives in the line of duty. Terrorists and insurgents have suffered an estimated casualty of 19,919; and the role of Pakistan in this conflict initiated after the 9/11 attacks. Pakistan was identified as the most important ally due to its strategic location regarding Afghanistan and the presence of terror outfits on its soil.
The country’s leadership has condemned terror activities and embarked on a long and arduous struggle to eradicate terrorism. The war on terror and terrorism has not inflicted its wrath on just a specific country or region, but changed the entire geopolitical environment. In addition to this, the economic recession, which started in the United States, has quickly engulfed the whole world.
