ISLAMABAD – Pakistan Muslim League-N’s Siddiqul Farooq on Monday alleged that President Asif Ali Zardari was involved in Benazir Bhutto’s murder and that Rehman Malik and Babar Awan were his accomplices. He went on to say the Zardari ‘tried his best’ to remove all proofs his involvement in the murder. Addressing a press conference here, Farooq said Benazir Bhutto had security concerns and felt threat from Musharraf and the Chaudhrys.
“But President Zardari has sent one of them in exile and now he is trying to reconcile with the Chaudhrys ,” he said, adding that President Zardari must think twice before making any statement against Nawaz Sharif. He asserted that there had been many inconsistencies in Zardari’s statements since the Benazir’s assassination. He cited Zardari’s interview by Christina Lamb in which he asserted Zardari said that an unknown person gave him the will of Benazir Bhutto during a meeting.
He alleged that it was Zardari who had ‘forced’ the former prime minister to come out of the roof top of her vehicle despite clear threats to her life. “Why did Zardari telephone Benazir and urged her to wave to her workers” he asked. When asked if he was willing to meet UN investigators, Siddique said ‘every thing would be clear with the passage of time’.
Continuing his war of words with Law Minister Babar Awan, PML-N leader said that Babar Awan was the creator of Benazir’s will. He informed Zardari to be aware of law minister because ‘everyone in Pindi and Kahuta knows very well about Awan’. He claimed that he would present tapes as proof of Babar’s corruption. Commenting on possible alliance of PPP and PML-Q, he said the coalition of both the parties would be the alliance of ‘killers of Benazir Bhutto’ and would strengthen the corrupt leadership. “One of them faces Swiss cases while others had gobbled up public loans” he added.
