PESHAWAR – Saif-ur-Rehman Sherzad, an Afghan journalist associated with a local Pashto daily, is missing since the last week of February, Pakistan Today learned on Sunday. Rehman belonged to the Nangarhar province of Afghanistan and had been living in Peshawar for a long time.
His relatives told Pakistan Today that Rehman left his home in Hayatabad on February 24 and had not returned since. They said after getting no response from Rehman, they contacted Hayatabad Police but were told to wait. During this period, they contacted relatives and friends from all over Peshawar and Nangarhar, but without success.
Rehman’s father Haji Aman Beg said they had no family or financial dispute with anyone. He however added that his family members, particularly Rehman, were under threat for the last several years. He said a member of Taliban named Abdul Rehman had threatened Rehman of dire consequences.
Rehman might have been picked up by the militants or their supporters, he added. Haji Aman Beg requested the United Nations Commission for Human Rights to ensure protection to Rehman and his family.
