KARACHI – PPP Co-chairman and President Asif Ali Zardari has said that some people were working to “take away our political space”, calling it against the 18th Amendment and in view of the Senate election in March next year.
Chairing a meeting of the PPP Sindh parliamentary committee on Saturday, Zardari said he had convened the meeting to discuss the country’s immediate issues and the challenges faced by the federation and the province. The president said he had sent a written advice to the prime minister for the reappointment of Justice (r) Deedar Hussain Shah to the office of the NAB chairman and also requested the prime minister to share the letter with the leader of the opposition.
During the meeting, the PPP Sindh parliamentary committee gave its full mandate to President Zardari to go ahead with the reconciliation process with the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q). However, the PPP’s Central Executive Committee would give a final approval on the issue. It was also decided that the MQM would be taken on board while making this move and the coalition partner’s reservations would be addressed.
Sources quoted the president as saying during the meeting that there were attempts to murder him during the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government and if the party could still go on to reconcile with the PML-N, there was nothing wrong with doing the same with the PML-Q. Zardari said the masses were the real power of the PPP and government would continue serving them. “The political forces of the country must understand the sensitivity of the situation and act jointly,” he added.
The president told the MPAs to avoid using language that was against parliamentary norms and avoid chanting slogans on the floor of the provincial assembly.
