LAHORE – Recent reports that terrorists could create trouble and put the cricket World Cup in jeopardy have forced the Pakistan government to ask India to provide fool-proof security to its cricketers. The World Cup is being jointly hosted by India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh and recent intelligence reports have suggested that terrorists are planning to strike match venues in India to jeopardize the mega-event. Pakistan’s Foreign Office spokesperson, Tehmina Janjua, while responding to reports appearing in the Indian media that Pakistan-based terror groups were planning to launch an attack, said in a statement on Friday: “We hope India will make fool-proof arrangements for the security of the World Cup. Pakistan, itself a victim of terrorism, takes all such reports seriously.”
Reacting to reports about ultra-right groups in India threatening to disrupt the World Cup final in Mumbai if Pakistan made it to the summit clash, Janjua said it was a matter of grave concern, adding that Islamabad had taken up the issue with New Delhi.
Shiv Sena, a Hindu party with a stronghold in the Indian state of Maharashtra, has threatened to disrupt the final match at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on April 2 if Pakistan makes it to the title round.
