KARACHI – The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Sindh chapter has given a strike call for today (Friday) to protest the Supreme Court’s decision of removing National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Chairman Justice (r) Deedar Hussain Shah. The party also announced that its MPAs will stage a protest walk from the Sindh Assembly building to the Sindh High Court after court proceedings are over. Karachi Transport Ittehad has backed the strike, but the Awami National Party (ANP) Sindh’s spokesman said his party would not support the PPP since the ANP was not consulted while giving the strike call.
PPP Sindh Secretary-General Taj Haider said that while the party respected the judiciary, the decision was made without consulting the prime minister. “All businessmen, traders and transporters in Sindh are requested to keep their businesses closed on Friday,” Haider said. “Over the years, the PPP has been dragged to court regardless of being in power or in opposition,” Haider told Pakistan Today. “We have fought for an independent judiciary, but not of this kind.” Meanwhile, unidentified armed people were witnessed closing down shops forcibly in Karachi, warning shopkeepers against indulging in business today.
