ISLAMABAD – The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed the Flood Commission – set up to probe overflowing of rivers, charges of deliberate diversion of floodwater and breaches in embankments of barrages and canals during the recent floods – to complete the probe within six weeks and submit a report to the court’s registrar. A two-member bench, comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and Justice Ghulam Rabbani, was hearing a suo motu case against the breaches allegedly made in embankments on letters written by renowned lawyer Fakhruddin G Ebrahim and Senate Deputy Chairman Jan Muhammad Khan Jamali and a petition moved by PML-Q MNA Marvi Memon.
Dr Asad Laghari, Muhammad Rahim Baloch and Zahida Thebo had also approached the SC on the issue. Expressing satisfaction over the commission’s performance, Marvi told the court that it was thoroughly probing the matter. However, the task required more time. She said members of the commission were visiting affected areas in all the provinces, adding that she would herself visit the areas to ascertain the facts.
