FIA DG’s allegations – CJP orders SHC to ascertain veracity

ISLAMABAD – Taking notice of a statement by Federal Investigation Agency Director General Waseem Ahmed that owners of Khanani and Kalia foreign exchange company had used heavy bribes to ensure their release, Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on Monday directed the Sindh High Court to probe into the matter by appointing a senior judge to ascertain the veracity of the claims and submit a report within seven days. The SHC chief justice has been directed to conduct an inquiry without prejudice into the claims of the accused and prosecution to the merits of the case.
“It is a fairly serious allegation apparently leveled against the presiding officer of the Banking Court, Karachi, who decided the case. Although the allegation is of general nature and does not specify who and at what level the alleged corruption took place, but apparently it relates to investigation, prosecution, the Banking Court, etc and requires probe into the matter,” the CJP said his order.
It was also alleged in the statement that owners of the company received VIP treatment during their arrest and they spent most of their time at the hospital. The statement alleged that the jail doctor kept both of them under treatment in the hospital without recommendations of the medical board, and that Khanani and Kalia got their release orders from the court before completion of inquiry into the money laundering case.
