Proposal to form body to run Home Dept complaint centre okayed

KARACHI – Sindh Home Minister Dr Zulfiqar Ali Mirza has approved a proposal for the constitution of an oversight committee to operate the department’s complaint centre on a public-private partnership basis. According to a Home Department statement issued on Sunday, the minister said that the proposal would be submitted to the Sindh chief minister for formal approval. The proposal was shaped by the Consultant on Home Affairs, Sharfuddin Memon for making the complaint centre more target-oriented and accountable. The oversight committee would be headed by the chief minister as its chief patron. The Sindh home minister would act as the chairman and the consultant on home affairs its secretary.
The committee would have an equal number of members both from the public and the private sector, it added. It further maintained that the main purpose of the committee was to ensure timely redressing of the grievances. The main functions of the committee would be to look into the complaints related to police excesses, misbehaviour, illegal detention and non-registration of FIRs while it would also scrutinise the complaints pertaining to extortion, land grabbing, child/women trafficking, human rights violations etc. Moreover, the oversight committee will also help organise open kachehries with the DIGs, DPOs and TPOs and SHOs concerned for the respective jurisdiction, the sttatment added.
SPECIAL BRANCH AND CID: The Special Branch and CID police force must be utilised at optimum level to prevent acts of terrorism, Sindh Home Minister Dr Zulfiqar Ali Mirza directed the Sindh IGP on Sunday. “Intelligence gathering and sharing of information with police high-ups by the Special Branch and the CID can play a key role in checking lawlessness, acts of terrorism and targeted killings,” he observed in a statement while referring to the murder of Maulana Ahmed Madni and his son in New Karachi on Saturday. The home minister directed the IGP to take extraordinary security measures to protect the life and property of the masses as has been pledged by the PPP leadership.
He was of the view that besides the police and law enforcement agencies, it was also the responsibility of the public to check the movement of suspicious elements in their respective areas and report their activities to the police. The minister said that at the same time, the police should coordinate with politicians and ulema of all sects to ensure effective measures for controlling the law and order situation in the province.
