KARACHI – The three-day 48th annual symposium of the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) would start from March 21. More than 200 research papers in different disciples of medicine would be presented on the occasion. Twenty-six lectures would be conducted and a workshop on smoking cession is also on the schedule. There will be special sessions on advanced laparoscopy, advanced endoscopy, medical education and medical ethics for health professionals, effective medical management of bomb blast victims and dental and maxillofacial.
Moreover, gold medals would be awarded for best research paper presentation in every session and best poster presentation. The chairman of the Scientific and Organising Committee of the symposium Prof SM Tariq Rafi said that eminent speakers from medical science, NGOs concerned with the medical field and other social rganisations will also attend the symposium.
He said that the committee received a good response from doctors when the JPMC invited abstracts of presentations for its symposium. He said that the sessions on medicine would focus on gastroenterology, dermatology, hematology, rheumatology, endocrine, nephrology, pulmonology and cardiology. The session on surgery would encompass colorectal, gastroenterology, laparoscopy, cardio-thoracic, urology, orthopaedic, plastic and trauma.
Three different sessions of medicine and allied subjects and sub-sessions on endocrinology would particularly focus on anaesthesia/critical care while that on gynecology and obstetrics would have neonatology and laparoscopy as its components.
Another important session would be on radiology. The session on neurosciences would focus on psychiatry, neurology and neurosurgery while the one on ENT will deal with eye and fascioplastic.
A session followed by sub-sessions on basic medical sciences would include anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, pathology, microbiology and clinical pathology A session has also been planned to deliberate on the issues related to education and training of nurses and paramedics.
