LAHORE – The Punjab Finance Department has abolished eight posts of the clean drinking water project “in haste” without fulfilling the basic requirement of issuing a one-month prior notification, Pakistan Today has learnt.
The clean drinking water project is a federal government-funded project, which was handed over to the Local Government and Community Development Department of the Punjab government, but was stopped owing to downsizing drive of the government. But the funds already released by the federal government were being utilised and the project was continuing.
The finance department issued a notification to abolish the project director and other posts in the Project Management Unit (PMU). According to sources, the project was to expire by March 31 in any case and the move by the finance department made no sense. They said that the funds have already been released and being utilised for the working of the already-installed equipment.
“Removing the key post of the project director without issuing a one-month prior notification, a legal requirement, can create a lot of complications including release of salaries,” they said. A departmental meeting of senior officials from the LG&CD department was also held to discuss the situation. The department has written to the finance department to modify the notification.
