KARACHI – The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Friday disposed of a constitutional petition regarding the transporters’ strike, but also ordered the government to ensure the provision of transport facilities to citizens if transporters continued their strike.
A division bench headed by Justice Ghulzar Ahmed passed the order on a petition moved by Farah Awan that has sought the withdrawal of the strike call, arguing that the Karachi Transport Ittehad (KTI) had issued a strike call without holding any dialogue with the authorities concerned.
Counselling on behalf of the petitioner, Advocate Javed Ahmed Chattari appeared before the court and argued that the transporters’ bodies issued a strike call to blackmail the government into fulfilling their demands to increase fares and get other benefits. He said that commuters suffered a lot as they were unable to afford their own transport, but transporters’ representative bodies and government authorities benefited through such strikes.
Assistant advocate General, Shafi Muhammad Memon submitted that the government will provide transportation to citizens if the strike continued.
